Gibson Custom SJ-200 Anniversary Limited - Cremona Burst
The Interstellar Tone Traveler has now had the privilege of carrying three guitars from Gibson Custom's five-model Anniversary Collection celebrating 100 Years of Gibson Flat-Tops — and the SJ-200 is the collection's crown jewel. Every guitar in this series is limited to 100 units worldwide, built under the open skies of Bozeman, Montana, and appointed with the kind of materials and craftsmanship that make each one a generational instrument. But the SJ-200 carries a specific weight within that context: this is "The King of the Flat-Tops," the guitar that has ruled the acoustic stage since 1937 — embraced by cowboy crooners, country legends, folk artists, and rock royalty — and Gibson Custom has dressed it accordingly. Cremona Burst over a hand-selected AAA Flame Maple body, a bear claw Sitka Spruce top where the rare diagonal figuring in the grain catches and refracts the light, abalone purfling across the top binding, an abalone rosette, and abalone dots inlaid into the tortoise SJ-200 vines-and-flowers pickguard — this guitar is covered in detail from every angle, and every detail is right.
The 2-piece AA Maple neck with walnut stringer is a visual statement unto itself before you ever reach the bound rosewood fingerboard, where Mother of Pearl Graduated Crowns mark positions in the pattern the SJ-200 has owned since its introduction. The vintage script "The Gibson" headstock logo in Mother of Pearl, the single-ply bound headstock, and gold-plated Grover Imperial tuning machines bring authentic period character to the instrument's top end. Below, the 2-Bar Moustache rosewood bridge — MOP bar inlays included — holds a bone saddle over TUSQ bridge pins in the configuration that defined the earliest and most prized Super Jumbo instruments. LR Baggs VTC electronics with soundhole-mounted controls make this as capable on stage as it is in a collection, and an Anniversary truss rod cover marks this instrument's place in Gibson history. Traditional hand-scalloped X-bracing with the Custom Shop's standard of execution completes an acoustic guitar that is, in every dimension, the largest, loudest, and most ornate chapter in this year's Anniversary story. Certificate of Authenticity included.
