We've brought a lot of extraordinary gear through the Interstellar Guitars airlock, but the Friedman Pink Taco V2 is the kind of amp that makes us stop and just listen for a while before we even think about writing anything down. Dave Friedman is one of the most respected amp builders and guitar technicians on the planet — the man behind the tones of some of the most legendary players in the universe — and the Pink Taco V2 is one of his most delightfully subversive creations. The conventional wisdom across the tone galaxy has always been that EL-84 tubes can't produce the tight bottom end and rich midrange authority of an EL-34 monster. Dave Friedman built the Pink Taco V2 specifically to prove that wrong, and it does so decisively. Through custom transformers and the clearest signal path he could engineer, this 20-watt cathode-biased head delivers the kind of tight, focused low end and harmonically complex midrange that players typically associate with a 100-watt EL-34 beast — in a package that weighs 22 pounds and fits on a shelf. The moment you plug in, the difference is immediately apparent: chords bloom with harmonic detail, single notes sustain with authority, and the guitar's volume knob cleans the whole thing up with a responsiveness that high-gain amps of this character rarely offer. Handcrafted in the USA with tongue and groove Marine Grade Baltic Birch construction and an aluminum chassis, the Pink Taco V2 is boutique amplification without compromise.
The control layout is beautifully considered for a single-channel design — Gain, Treble, Mid, Bass, and Master Volume cover the fundamentals, while the Fat Switch, S-Switch for gain structure, and Sat Switch open up a range of voices within that single channel that cover everything from punchy crunch to full saturation without ever requiring a channel switch. The ultra-transparent effects loop preserves every nuance of the amp's tone when processing gear enters the chain, and the 4, 8, and 16 ohm speaker outputs give total flexibility for any cabinet configuration in any corner of the galaxy. This particular example arrives in excellent condition with a custom Tuki slip cover — one of the finest protective covers available, adding both practical value and the knowledge that someone cared for this amp the way it deserves. Three 12AX7 preamp tubes driving two EL84s through custom Friedman transformers: small in size, enormous in mission. We consider this one of the most rewarding finds we've made in the amplifier universe recently.
