If the ES-335 50's is the original deep-space vessel — broad-shouldered, substantial, built for maximum tonal gravity — then the ES-335 60's is what happened when the engineers got back to the drawing board and asked how to make it fly faster. Same fundamental spacecraft architecture: three-ply Maple/Poplar/Maple semi-hollow body, solid maple centerblock keeping feedback at bay while sustain launches into orbit, single-ply cream binding tracing every curve with classic elegance. But the 60's model evolves the design in ways that changed the ES-335's mission profile entirely. The SlimTaper mahogany neck is the most immediate difference under the hand — thinner, faster, and more immediately responsive than the Rounded C on the 50's model, built for players whose technique demands speed without sacrificing the warmth that mahogany always delivers. Small block acrylic inlays on the cream-bound rosewood fingerboard mark the visual transition from the earliest dot-neck examples to the sleeker, more sophisticated cosmetics of the early 1960s — the configuration that graced the ES-335s of the Clapton era and beyond. Grover Rotomatic tuners with milk bottle buttons lock the tuning down with mechanical authority, and the Vintage Sunburst gloss nitrocellulose finish — cherry darkening to amber, amber opening into the warm glow of maple at the center — is arguably the most iconic color the 335 has ever worn.
The T-Type humbuckers with Alnico 5 magnets are where the 60's model stakes its own tonal claim, separate and distinct from the Custombucker PAF recreation in the 50's. The T-Top is its own legend — a Gibson humbucker design with a brighter, more articulate character and a snap and presence that players have sought out in vintage instruments for decades. Alnico 5 magnets push the output and clarity with a little more focus and edge than the warmer Alnico 3, making the 60's model a sharper, more defined voice in the ES-335 family without losing any of the warmth and complexity that makes the format legendary. Hand-wired 500K pots and Orange Drop capacitors ensure the signal path is as pure as the day it left the shop, and the individual volume and tone controls per pickup with 3-Way Switchcraft selector give total command over the tonal universe at all times. The short 60's-style five-ply black pickguard, Black Top Hat knobs with silver inserts, and Amber Catalin switch tip round out a vintage specification that is decisively, confidently of its era. At 8 lbs. 8 oz., this ES-335 60's in Vintage Sunburst is ready to warp.
